About The Story Theatre/Grand Opera House

Built in 1913 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Story Theatre will be celebrating 100 years of entertainment to Story City and the central Iowa area this December. The theater is owned/operated by Todd Thorson.

Todd Thorson has operated the theater since December of 1983, having took over the theater operations from Dick and Virgil Peterson. The Petersons came to Story City, along with their parents in 1946, and ran the theater for 37 years. Thorson will be celebrating 30 years in the business along with the 100th anniversary of the historic opera house this December. The Story Theater has the distinction of being the oldest continually running theater in Iowa and even perhaps the five state area, having never closed its doors in its nearly 100 years of existence.
