About Carl Johnson Gallery

Carl's interest in art and his early talent have shaped his life. He holds a BFA in Design from the University of Illinois/Champaign and became a commercial artist in the metro Chicago area. In 1970 he moved to Galena, Illinois to paint full time. Galena's Historic District has greatly inspired him in developing his pen-and-ink and watercolor technique to record historic architecture.Carl and his Watercolors!

In 1977 Carl published The building of Galena: An Architectural Legacy, including 15 watercolor illustrations.

Since 1985 Carl has had the privilege of leading sketch trips for U of I Architectural students in Europe. Each April he enjoys introducing watercolor techniques to a new group of students.

As a location painter, Carl now travels broadly, continuously being inspired by the beauty and diversity of our world. His subject matter has expanded through the years to include sweeps of landscape and single blossoms, as well as cityscapes new and old.
