A little about Morris
Downtown Morris has been called a “Rockwellian” downtown by the Chicago Tribune and it’s less than 20 minutes from the crowds and look-alike shopping centers. Named among the 50 great day trips in Chicago Magazine, Morris is an original outdoor shopping destination with interesting stores, fun dining, and a variety of recreational activities. Located on the historic I&M Canal, Nostalgic Downtown Morris offers a rich history and continues to be the gathering place year after year for community festivals. Nestled along 1-80 just 60 minutes from downtown Chicago, Morris offers the best of both worlds… a quaint old fashioned appeal and a wealth of unique shops that rival the finest any big city has to offer.
The history of Morris
In 1834, the very first log cabin was built in Morris at what is now Jefferson and Nettle Street. Eight years later, the Village of Morris was established. In 1839, villagers built the Shakey Bridge across Nettle Creek to influence stagecoach lines to travel through the village. By 1845, daily mail was being delivered by the United States Postal Service. With the opening of the I&M Canal in 1848, and the first steam train railroad in 1853, Morris continued to grow and prosper.
