About Buffalo Bodega Saloon & Steakhouse

The Buffalo Bar (as it was originally known) is one of the oldest establishments in Deadwood. It has been located at this site since it’s founding in June of 1877.

Mike Russell arrived by stagecoach to Deadwood on March 6, 1877. At that time there were at least 17 saloons in town, but Mike thought there was room for one more. He established the Buffalo Bar, named for his good friend and hunting partner Buffalo Bill Cody. Of those original 17 establishments, the Buffalo Bodega is one of the very few that remain today.

In the past 135 years the building has housed everything from prostitutes to brass lights, crystal glassware, and a full-sized stuffed buffalo, a gift from Buffalo Bill. Mike Russell’s legacy as one of the pioneer spirits and entrepreneurial founders of Deadwood, lives on the Buffalo Bodega Complex today.
