A little about Cambridge
We have been voted best place to shop, one of the 100 best getaways and we like to think they are right. A Victorian era downtown with shops, boutiques and coffee shops offers a great backdrop for annual festival and events and anchors the area countryside filled with art studios, seasonal markets, great lakes, museums, parks and trail systems. We also are home for Rowe Pottery, famous for their salt fired glazes.
The history of Cambridge
Cambridge was established in 1847 by settling Scottish and Norwegian farmers. Within the first few years, a small village began to take shape with various businesses opening up including: a grist mill, general store, hotel, saloon, a cabinet shop, and a milliner all lining Main Street. One of the hotels, a stage coach stop, still stands on Main Street today. By the 1860s, Cambridge had grown to a population of 250 residents, mostly retired farmers and shopkeepers. In addition to the stores listed above, the village also boasted a blacksmith and repair shop, a hardware store a post office and a doctor’s office. Many of the village’s young men enlisted to serve in the Civil War. A statue in the Village Square today honors the veterans of that war.
